SEVEN DAYS · 10–15 MINUTES A DAY
Praying the Prayer of Jabez
A seven-day journey into grace, daily provision, service, God’s presence and lasting hope. Read slowly, pray honestly and take one practical step each day.
How to use this plan
Read the day’s Bible passages in your own Bible, then use the reflection, question and prayer. Links to the numbered prayers lead to the main guide. You may spread the plan over seven weeks or return to a day that needs more time. No particular result is promised within seven days.
Day 1: Begin with grace
Read: 1 Chronicles 4:9–10; Ephesians 2:8–10
Jabez brings his request to the God of Israel. We too can bring our real story to God. In Christ, our relationship with God begins with grace. Before asking for a larger life, take time to receive the love that holds you now. Pain can be named without becoming the only truth about you.
Reflect: What am I hoping God’s blessing will prove about my worth?
Pray: Father, help me receive your love before I try to achieve. Meet me in my real story and shape my heart through Jesus.
Respond: Write three gifts you have received and one truth about your identity in Christ.
Related prayers: 1. Receive grace before striving; 2. Recognise gifts already given; 3. Seek a Christlike heart; 4. Bring painful beginnings to God.
Day 2: Trust God with daily needs
Read: Matthew 6:9–13, 25–34
Jesus includes daily bread in the prayer he teaches. Ordinary needs belong in our conversation with God. Asking for provision can sit alongside careful planning, honest work, seeking support and generosity. Think about someone else’s daily bread as well as your own.
Reflect: What practical need should I bring to God, and whose need might I help meet?
Pray: Father, provide what is needed today. Give me wisdom to steward what I have and compassion to share.
Respond: Take one practical step on a pressing need and offer one manageable act of generosity.
Related prayers: 5. Ask for daily provision; 6. Practise wise stewardship; 7. Become a blessing to someone.
Day 3: Make room for people
Read: Luke 10:25–37; 1 Peter 4:10
Our application of enlargement begins with love. A wider capacity to notice, welcome and serve people can be a deeply fruitful answer to prayer. Consider the neighbour, newcomer or colleague already near you. Ask what love would look like in their situation before planning something bigger.
Reflect: Who could experience God’s kindness through my attention this week?
Pray: Jesus, enlarge my capacity to love. Help me notice people, welcome difference and speak of you with gentleness.
Respond: Choose a neighbour or community to pray for and make one respectful offer of help or welcome.
Related prayers: 8. Grow in faithful responsibility; 9. Make room for a neighbour; 10. Serve Leeds and the nations; 11. Speak of Jesus with courage.
Day 4: Bring your work and future to God
Read: Colossians 3:23–24; James 1:5
God cares about the way we work as well as the outcomes we want. Faithfulness includes fair dealing, learning, keeping commitments and seeking counsel. A promising opportunity deserves careful discernment. Ask whether it will help you honour God and care for the people entrusted to you.
Reflect: What would integrity require if it made my progress slower?
Pray: Wise Father, guide my work and decisions. Develop my gifts and give me courage to choose what is right.
Respond: Write one decision on paper, name the information you need and ask a trusted person for counsel.
Related prayers: 12. Work and study with integrity; 13. Develop gifts for the common good; 14. Discern the right opportunities.
Day 5: Depend on God's presence
Read: John 15:1–12; 2 Corinthians 12:7–10
Jesus describes fruitful life through the picture of branches remaining in a vine. Dependence is an everyday posture. In weakness, we can pray for change while receiving grace for today. Choose the prayer points that meet your situation; you do not need to rush through all six.
Reflect: Where am I acting as though everything depends on me?
Pray: Jesus, keep me close to you. Holy Spirit, give me wisdom, strength and willingness to obey the next clear step.
Respond: Protect ten quiet minutes for Scripture and prayer, and ask for help with one burden.
Related prayers: 15. Live in daily dependence; 16. Ask for wisdom; 17. Make space for the Holy Spirit; 18. Receive strength in weakness; 19. Let peace shape my response; 20. Listen and obey with humility.
Day 6: Pray for protection and practise care
Read: Matthew 6:13; Ephesians 4:25–32; Ephesians 6:10–18
Prayer for protection belongs alongside truthful choices, wise boundaries and concern for vulnerable people. We ask God to guard us and to shape how we treat others. Forgiveness does not require pretending harm did not happen or abandoning appropriate safeguards.
Reflect: Is there a word, habit or situation that needs a safer and more truthful response?
Pray: Father, keep us from evil. Guard our relationships and help us act with truth, courage and compassion.
Respond: Take one practical safety or accountability step and use your words to encourage someone.
Related prayers: 21. Seek protection from evil; 22. Resist temptation and dishonesty; 23. Use words that bring life; 24. Pray for households and the vulnerable.
Day 7: Continue in hope and fruitful love
Read: Romans 8:26–27; John 15:8–12; Micah 6:8
The end of a week is a place to notice and continue. Some circumstances may have changed; others may still hurt. Give thanks honestly and make room for lament. Fruitfulness can appear in patience, repaired relationships, shared burdens and steady acts of love while you keep asking God for help.
Reflect: What is one practice of love I will continue, and what prayer still needs companionship?
Pray: Faithful Father, receive my thanks and unanswered questions. Keep forming a life that reflects Jesus and blesses others.
Respond: Review the week with a trusted person if helpful, choose one continuing practice and set a review date.
Related prayers: 25. Persevere when the answer is unclear; 26. Offer a life of fruitful love.
Notice what is growing
At the end of the week, look for changes in your attention, choices and relationships. Record both gratitude and unresolved questions. Choose one practice to continue for the next month and, if useful, ask someone to check in with you.
