CHRISTIAN GIVING

Understanding tithes offerings and generosity

The Bible speaks about generosity, responsibility and the way we use resources. Tithing means giving a tenth; an offering is a gift. Christians consider these ideas as part of a wider life of worship and service.

Read the Bible in context

Tithes appear in the Old Testament within the life of Israel. The New Testament also teaches generosity, care for people in need and support for ministry. Read 2 Corinthians 8–9 to consider the relationship between willingness, capacity and giving.

Give freely

Giving should be thoughtful and voluntary. It is not a payment for acceptance, prayer or God's favour, and should not be offered as a guarantee of financial return.

Consider your responsibilities

Take account of your circumstances and those who depend on you. If you face financial difficulty, seek suitable advice. You do not need to make a gift to ask the church for a pastoral conversation.

Ask about ANCC's teaching

If you want to understand how the church teaches about tithing and offerings, ask a pastor. You can raise questions openly rather than feeling you must make a decision during an appeal.

Practical giving information

Our giving page explains how to ask about the current arrangements. If you are visiting ANCC, there is no expectation to give.
