Bring your questions to Jesus and take the next step of honest trust.
Thomas’s encounter with the risen Jesus shows that serious questions can be brought into his presence. Mark connects trusting prayer with forgiveness, while Romans points us to hearing God’s word. These passages give us a direction for growing faith: attend to Jesus, speak truthfully and allow trust to shape the way we treat others.
Read and reflect on Scripture
Read slowly and consider each passage in its biblical setting. The full Bible passages are included here to help you stay with the guide.
John 20:27
World English Bible British Edition
27 Then he said to Thomas, “Reach here your finger, and see my hands. Reach here your hand, and put it into my side. Don’t be unbelieving, but believing.”
Jesus speaks to Thomas in the setting of his resurrection. The wider account helps us understand this invitation to believe.
Mark 11:22–24
World English Bible British Edition
22 Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God.
23 For most certainly I tell you, whoever may tell this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and doesn’t doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is happening, he shall have whatever he says.
24 Therefore I tell you, all things whatever you pray and ask for, believe that you have received them, and you shall have them.
Jesus directs faith towards God. Read this with the forgiveness teaching that follows, and with the wider biblical teaching on God’s will.
Mark 11:25–26
World English Bible British Edition
25 Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone; so that your Father, who is in heaven, may also forgive you your transgressions.
26 But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your transgressions.”
Verse 26 is included in this World English Bible edition; some modern translations place it in a textual note.
Romans 10:17
World English Bible British Edition
17 So faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Paul places faith in relation to hearing the message he has been proclaiming.
Give your question a clear shape
Uncertainty can feel overwhelming when several questions become one vague conclusion. Write one specific question: about Jesus, a Bible passage, an unanswered prayer or something you experienced in church. Separate what happened from what you think it means. Read the surrounding Scripture and discuss it with someone who can listen carefully. You may discover an answer, a better question or a subject that needs further study. Alongside inquiry, consider a practical expression of trust such as telling the truth or making peace where appropriate. Forgiveness can grow patiently; difficult feelings are not a score of your faith.
Four prayer starters
Use these prayers as a starting point, then add words of your own.
Perception
What am I noticing?
Jesus, meet me as I bring the questions I have hidden, and help me understand the truth about you.
Process
How am I understanding it?
Father, help me investigate honestly, read carefully and welcome a conversation that deepens understanding.
Purpose
What matters before God?
God, let my search for faith produce greater humility, mercy and willingness to forgive.
Path
What is my next faithful step?
Lord, guide me to one passage, one helpful conversation and one faithful action I can take today. Amen.
Put it into practice today
- Write one question and the experience or assumption behind it.
- Read John 20 around Thomas’s encounter, noticing what Jesus says and what Thomas does.
- Arrange a conversation with a trusted Christian who makes room for careful questions.
- Name a resentment you would like help addressing, without forcing yourself to pretend the hurt has disappeared.
- Choose one small response consistent with Jesus’ teaching and return to your question with patience.
Questions for reflection or a small group
- What is my actual question, stated in one sentence?
- What evidence or understanding would help me consider it?
- What might trust change in the way I respond to another person?
Discuss the Bible and the questions at your own pace. Sharing personal experiences is optional.
