FAITH, COMMUNITY AND EVERYDAY LIFE

How can I pray when life feels unfair?

You can bring anger, disappointment and confusion into prayer. Christian prayer includes lament: honestly naming pain before God while continuing to seek care, wisdom and a responsible next step.

Lament is part of the Bible

Psalm 13 begins with questions about God’s apparent absence. Such prayers show that honest distress can be expressed within faith. Read the whole psalm rather than using its ending to rush someone past their pain.

Avoid explaining someone else’s suffering

You may not know why a particular event happened. A quick spiritual explanation can add harm, especially if it blames a person for illness or loss. Listening and practical care may be more useful than offering certainty.

Ask for help as well as praying

Tell a trusted person what support would help. Relevant medical, financial or other professional advice may be needed. Prayer does not require carrying a difficult situation alone or delaying appropriate care.

Choose words you can mean

A short prayer might name the situation, ask for strength and identify someone else you are concerned about. Silence can also be part of prayer. You do not have to manufacture confidence you do not feel.

Questions people ask
