FAITH, COMMUNITY AND EVERYDAY LIFE

How can I begin to know God?

Christians believe that God makes himself known through Jesus Christ. Beginning to know God involves exploring who Jesus is, listening to Scripture and responding honestly rather than trying to produce a particular religious feeling.

Read about Jesus

Start with a Gospel such as John or Mark. John 14:6–9 connects knowing Jesus with knowing the Father. Read the surrounding passage, notice who is speaking and ask what it claims about God.

Pray in ordinary words

You can tell God what you understand, what you hope for and what you find difficult. Matthew 6:5–13 offers Jesus’ teaching about prayer. You do not need impressive language or a public performance to begin.

Explore with other people

A Christian community can help you read, ask questions and see how belief shapes everyday choices. Ask about the church’s beliefs and safeguards as well as its activities. Trust should grow through clear, accountable relationships.

Be honest about uncertainty

You may be unsure whether God exists or how Christian claims relate to another religion. A respectful conversation should allow those questions. Start with one question and one passage rather than trying to settle everything at once.
